Philippe Gilbert finished third behind Sagan and Colbrelli on Wednesday. He is also third in the GC standings, three seconds behind Greg Van Avermaet and could target the Yellow Jersey.
Another rider that could be in the mix is Sonny Colbrelli, who has twice finished runner up so far. The Italian, who won over the Hatta Dam this year, don’t mind a hill as well as Jelle Vanendert who had an excellent Ardennes week on this kind of terrain.
Geraint Thomas and Michal Kwiatkowski are both capable to contest the victory here, but we expect both Sky guys to protect their captain Froome rather than run for personal glory.
What about GC contenders? Richie Porte thrives on short efforts, as does Simon Yates and Chris Froome isn’t half bad either.
Mikel Landa was impressive at the Tour De Suisse on the small inclines bu he could lead Valverde up the final climb rather than run to win himself.
